Professor David Reynolds and Dr Kristina Spohr – Nuclear Weapons

30 years ago this month the superpowers almost decided to rid themselves completely of nuclear weapons. The Reykjavik summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev has been seen as an historic missed opportunity because neither side was willing to back down over America’s ‘Star Wars’ project. But Historians Professor David Reynolds and Doctor Kristina Spohr challenge this interpretation in their new book ‘Transcending the Cold War.’ They say that Reykjavik helped bring about real commitment to nuclear disarmament and was one of several meetings between world leaders that helped bring the Cold War to a peaceful end.
